Recently back from Seoul after making an exhibition with British artist Sir Peter Blake for the Bean Pole fashion label.
Paddy Mehan, curator, asked if I’d be interested in creating an installation with Peter around the idea of cycling. The three of us worked out a plan whereby I’d project film images onto Peter’s prints.
Together with Tota Hasegawa, we included infa red sensors to turn projectors on and off whenever a visitor walked nearby. So the exhibit changed and responded to interaction.
All the films run as continuous loops. I used repetition to convey the action of cycling. Watching the same film loop over and over forces you to see new things at every replay, it’s very theraputic drawing in the viewer meditatively.
That’s where the title for the show came from. The cyclical nature of the images and the outcome.

between Brian (Eno), Karl, Leo Abrahams (guitar), Jon Hopkins (keyboards)
the Necks and Toby Vogel (Visuals) at the Sydney Opera House.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the performance day but I did attend
the 2 days of ‘rehersals’. They are rare moments were some ‘thing’ transcends
its materials and means. This was one of those magical, alchemic moments.
Throughout the two days I drew the movement and the sound of each
improvisational piece, ending up with a suite of 11 drawings. Each drawing
lasted as long as the piece. In one instance, 75 minutes.

despite tomato’s brave attempts to save the multinational GM corporation through creativity alone, it looks like our efforts may have been made too late!

Two new tv spots built entirely from CG elements. the car shots, although computer generated draw from precise live action sequences, lit and shot as if to use in the final edit. Tracking, lighting and camera moves were all processed so that we could integrate the vehicle into each scene.

Archive footage of Richard Nobel and Børg Ousland, both pioneering characters, appear on the projection screens made of light that float above the car. The films are modular, allowing any celebrity to be dropped into the projection layers in future cuts.

Melbourne Museum of Printing (MMOP) is a working museum (more accurately
a ‘treasure house’) of typography and printing. Since 1993 it has focused
on the retention of traditional printing methods and equipment. Initially
established as the Australian Type Company; containing a comprehensive
collection of printing presses, typesetting machines, types and other
print-related artefacts in addition to its Monotype-based typecasting
machines and matrix collection. In due course, it became the last remaining
typefoundry in Australia and should, by commercial norms, have closed
in the early 1990’s when proprietor Michael Isaachsen turned the whole
collection into a non-profit museum. Michael has carried on where many
would given up but has now run into financial difficulties and the museum
is threatened with closure and its irreplaceable collection forever lost.
To get over its immediate problem and to help pave a way to a sustainable
future a show/event was organised where 20 of Melbourne’s Graphic Designers/
Typographers/Artists each made a set of 20 prints as a fund raiser for
the Museum. In this electronically-dominated era the art of letterpress
and print is threatened and so it’s important/imperative that places
such as this survive and indeed flourish – not only as an historical
‘curio’ but as a living and viable means of expression. The sheer physical
enjoyment of making a print is shared not only by ‘professionals’ but by
the many schoolchildren that come along on ‘educational’ trips to the museum.
For further information and photographs of the event -

These spots were for the new General Motors “Cruze” model.
The brief was to create a 45 second commercial featuring the car exploring a landscape built up from light projections.
As we make our way through shards of light, the story of a maverick individual unfolds on the screens around the car.

The car was shot performing various maneuvers and turns around a pre set course.
The camera data, including any imperfections, as well as the lighting information were then extracted and applied to CG models of the car in it’s rebuilt environment. Each shot was completely recreated from scratch.
This allowed the projection screens to be created and dropped into the scene while maintaining complete control over environment and reflections on the car.

The ads play so that new individual stories can be rendered into the projection screens. This allowed a series of stories to be created around one cut.

after nearly a year in the making lyle and scott re-launch their e-commerce website. tomato were bought in to help lyle and scott modernize and re-focus their range of products to the outside world. a pure, flat hierarchy of design was created where each of the lyle and scott styles; vintage, heritage, club and golf could be easily located and quickly purchased. as well as their own sections, all styles can be found under the lyle and scott banner, uniting all eagles as one family.

to set the tone for this new language, simple no nonsense black and white portraits showing a classic piece from each style were conceived for the background imagery. roger rich took the helm and shot a range of single and multiple models that show the nuances and cut of each piece perfectly and with that lyle and scott attitude it takes to wear them. vintage worn by jamie, heritage by vinny, club and golf by joe and cecile.

all product was photographed flat and appears on a slightly transparent background, allowing the brand imagery to layer through and further create beautifully odd crops. hats off to pete theideke and gabrial lloret for wading through the five hundred odd pieces and keeping focus. all the code and back end work was done the boys at chapter 8 in leeds.
