tomato was founded in 1991 as a collective comprising artists, designers, musicians and writers. the group develops cross platform, multi-media projects; both commercial and research based.
tomato engage in publishing, exhibitions, live performances, public speaking and hosting workshops as well as working with clients in the areas of advertising, architecture, fashion, public installations, music, television, film and graphic design.
created for the inaugural show of reed space gallery, tokyo. made over a month, the content was inspired by the reading of news events. One or two images were created daily, eventually forming a pictorial newspaper re-presenting the history of the month. August appears in the 2007 TDC annual.
Tomato designed the Word Collider for Nokia as part of their in-store content. The generative birth and disintegration of the words all lead back to the original state of “Being”. The cycle repeats once all configurations have been explored.
The classic 70’s digital watch adapted with production techniques that allowed combinations of metal finishes. The design concept is derived from the in built location sensor that adjusts to global time frames.
The Seiko Spectrum is the first watch in the world to use flexible e-paper or electrophoretic display (EPD). Tomato designed the graphics and animations in collaboration with the Seiko Design Centre. Released in January 2006 in an edition of 500 this watch won the 2006 prize as the best Electronic Watch of the Year at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie in Geneva, 2006.
